Significance of Contingency Theory in Moderm Management

The obvious importance of Contingency Theory in modern management is that what works for a company or organization may not work for another. For simple reason, situation in any given organization characteristics differ. That’s why these situation characticteristics are called contingencies.
For the above reason, however, managers are in serious need to understand the key factors for these contingencies to guide them toward determination of most effective practices for every situation.
Positive results of contingeny theory application depends on applying management principles or rules covers division of labor and position hierarchy. These rules lead to positive results.
Each situation has its own nuances and equip managers with a unique set of problems to solve and manage. Any discrepancy between the situation and decisions to solve it may geopardize the process of management and increase the errors in that process. In other words, a situation for any managerial problem should fit the decision made by managers for best performance.
Alternatively, high performance results when management practices are attuned or contingent with the demands of the criteria context being faced.
Contingency theory strongly warns that managers must be qualified with high flexibility in order to apply certain techniques and principles, which in return are expected to make the most appropriate decision to each situation.
Factors enhance appropriate application are many. For example, the size of the company, the number of employess, the environment, types of jobs, supply and demand. Reports accuracy, manufacturing, distribution, advertisement, and discipline matters,
From the above examples, we take the environment for instance, environmental change which includes the development of new techniques or the entry of new competitors to the market. In this case managers need to follow one type of management called: decentralization, in which authority is manged by lower position levels, so that decisions may be made faster with more flexibility. This type of management may be described as bottom-up management.
In the case of stable environment, the other type of organizational management may be practiced, which we call centralized management. What we mean here, is application of centralized structure, where decisions comes from top mangers to bottom managers. Decision in this type may be called Top-Down or up-bottom management. This type is taken to exercize more central and efficient efforts over resources.
In conclusion, contingency theory recommends that managers should identify the situation first, and understand the contingencies before selecting the best management practice to fit the situation.
