In old Chinese culture was this tale, I challenge readers to solve the problem in it. The tale reads:
There was a farmer living faraway in old China with his 10 years daughter after his wife died three years back. He used to work in land everyday for several years. Sometimes he has good harvest, other years are zero productive. Therefore, he began to borrow money for his family to survive from a man who gave him the money at exorbitant interest rates used to lend almost all farmers in the region. The farmer was expecting a better rainy season next year so he will return the money on time. But nature was severe for many years, the amount is becoming larger every year passed. One day, the lender saw that the farmer has a beautiful daughter, so he waited two more years when the girl becomes 13. He came to ask for his money with the interest, but the farmer had not saved enough money, the lender asked for the daughter to be his wife for the money. But the farmer refused his ugly request, the daughter also refused to marry the old naughty, usury man. The usury man brought the case to the court. The farmer and his daughter were afraid, but neighbors heard of the story. One smart farmer provided a solution game if they all accept his idea. He said: put two small stones one black and one white, and let the girl pick one. If the stone picked was white, the girl will not marry the lender and the amount will be zero. If the girl picked the black stone, she should marry the lender.
The usury man immediately picked two stones from the ground which was full of colored stones and put them in a Jar then close it. The trick was that the usury man picked two black stones, no one observe the stones, except the girl, with her sharp sight, she knew the trick made by the lender. The audience, great number of farmers were watching but no one see what the lender did. The girl began to think, how to solve the problem in order to save herself and her father from the loan money. What did she do to be the winner in this riddle?
Readers are invited too and may try to think to save the girl. The problem is serious.
Now the girl has three options to pick any of them:
- If she picked the white stone, she will be saved.
- If she picked the black stone she will accept marrying the cunning lender, and remove the loan, and;
- She can refuse, but she will suffer, where her dad will go to prison.
The girl in front of all farmers, observers, and judge, picked one of the stones from the Jar, and close her hand firmly, so no one can see the picked stone, then walked to give the stone to the judge. In her way she (intentionally) fell down and left the stone where the ground full of colored stones. The judge, said, it is OK, let’s see the other stone in the Jar. The girl picked the other stone which was black. By doing this, the lender was confused, but could not say any word, otherwise, the farmers will know the trick he made. So he kept his cunning method to himself.
The girl saved her Dad by her reasonable thinking. With no guessing involved.
In our lives we face many psychological, mathematical, personal and social problems, and sometimes very complicated ones, and may be seemed difficult to solve, but if we think rationally-like the girl in the tale-we surely will find the solution. Did you get it? Good! www.hasanyahya.com
